Uniquely positioned as the only coastal village within the Lake District National Park, Ravenglass is a tranquil and historic gem. It lies on an estuary where three rivers meet the sea, creating a beautiful natural harbour. This quiet corner of the Western Lakes is steeped in Roman history and is the starting point for one of Britain's most loved heritage railway journeys.
The La'al Ratty Railway

The star attraction is the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Affectionately known as the "La'al Ratty" (little railway in old Cumbrian dialect), this narrow-gauge steam railway takes you on a stunning seven-mile journey from the coast, deep into the breathtaking Eskdale valley. It's a truly unforgettable way to experience the dramatic scenery of the Western Fells, ending at Dalegarth station, a perfect base for some fantastic walks.
Roman History & Muncaster Castle

Ravenglass was an important Roman naval base. A short walk from the village you can find the remarkably well-preserved Roman Bath House, one of the tallest Roman structures still standing in Northern Britain.
Just a mile away stands the majestic Muncaster Castle. This historic (and reputedly haunted) castle has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. Explore the castle, wander the beautiful gardens, and don't miss the spectacular displays at the Hawk & Owl Centre.
Getting There
By Car: Ravenglass is on the A595, which runs along the Cumbrian coast. Access from the M6 involves a long but scenic drive across the county. The mountain passes (Hardknott and Wrynose) are an alternative but are extremely challenging and often closed in winter.
By Public Transport: Ravenglass has a station on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line, with services connecting to Carlisle in the north and Lancaster in the south. This makes it one of the few Lakeland villages easily accessible by mainline rail.
