How the timings work
Each leg uses Naismith's Rule — about one hour for every 5km, plus one hour for every 600m of ascent — adjusted by your chosen pace and with your rest time added on at the end. It's a planning estimate, not a promise: rough ground, scrambling, bad weather, navigation and tired legs all add time. Always build in a generous margin and carry a head torch.
Disclaimer
The figures shown by this tool — leg times, total distance, total ascent, estimated walking time and finish time, and any daylight comparison — are calculated from the distances and ascents you enter using Naismith's Rule with your chosen pace and rest allowances. They are provided free of charge for general guidance only, on an “as is” basis, and are approximate.
Naismith's Rule is a rough planning estimate only. Actual walking times vary considerably with fitness, group size, weather, underfoot conditions, rough or pathless ground, scrambling, navigation and the weight you carry, and can be significantly longer than calculated. The daylight check is only as good as the sunset time you enter, and in mountainous terrain the sun disappears behind high ground well before the calculated sunset.
Always plan to be off high or exposed ground in good time before dark with a generous margin, and carry an appropriate map and compass, a head torch and spare batteries, suitable clothing and supplies, and have the navigation skills and experience needed before setting out. Use of this tool is entirely at your own risk.

Common Questions
How are the walk times worked out?
Naismith's Rule: about one hour per 5km plus one hour per 600m of ascent, adjusted by your pace factor with rest time added. Times are an estimate and vary with fitness, terrain, weather and group size.
Is my route saved?
Yes — on your own device, in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers, and your route card is there when you come back. You can also print it or save it as a PDF.
Does it warn me about daylight?
If you enter today's sunset time it compares your estimated finish against it and flags whether you'll be down in good time, cutting it fine, or finishing after dark. Always allow a generous margin and carry a head torch.
