It has been famously described as “the best fell-top of all” by the renowned fell-walking legend and Lake District cartographer Alfred Wainwright.

So enamoured was Wainwright with the summit of Haystacks that his last wish was to have his ashes scattered here.

One can easily understand why Wainwright was such a devotee of Haystacks.

Its summit boasts a rugged wilderness with tarn and breathtaking views over Buttermere, making it unrivalled.

However, this is a long walk, so allow ample time to complete it and be prepared for some challenging scrambling.

To embark on this journey, head through the farm gate located at Grid Ref NY 194 149 and follow the path that crosses the bridge at the southern end of Buttermere.

After crossing the bridge at Grid Ref NY 188 147, you can turn right and circle Buttermere or continue straight ahead on the path through the trees.

At Grid Ref NY 187 147, turn left onto Scarth Gap Pass, a well-trodden path that takes you to the crossroads at Grid Ref NY 189 133.

Turn left, and the path will take you steeply up to the summit at Grid Ref NY 192 132, where some rock scrambling is required.

A cairn marks the summit atop a rock outcropping, and from there, you can continue straight, passing Innominate Tarn and Blackbeck Tarn, which are ideal spots for a picnic.

Veer left at Grid Ref NY 205 132 and followed the rocky and windy path down, with breathtaking views of Buttermere and Crummock Water, until you reach Gatesgarth Farm.

Estimated Total Time: 5 hours (for ascent and descent)

Ideal for: Individuals with moderate fitness levels, as well as older children, are suitable for this activity.

This guide should help you plan a safe, enjoyable, medium-difficulty fell walk on Haystacks.

Remember to respect the environment and always put safety first. Happy hiking!
