Sale Fell is a perfect introduction to fell walking for families and those looking for a shorter walk with a big payoff. Situated at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake, this small but shapely fell offers magnificent views for very little effort. Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start at Wythop Church

Park on the roadside near St Margaret's Church, Wythop (CA13 9YW). Go through a gate about 100m east of the church onto a footpath that starts to climb diagonally up the fellside.

2. The Gentle Ascent

The grassy path is clear and easy to follow. You will soon reach a bench with lovely views over Bassenthwaite Lake. Continue up the path. When it splits, keep to the right-hand path to continue your ascent to the top.

3. Summit of Sale Fell

You'll reach the spacious, grassy summit of Sale Fell (359m), marked with a small cairn. Take a moment to soak in the fantastic 360-degree views. This is a perfect spot for a family picnic.

4. The Circular Descent

From the summit, continue forwards, heading downhill on a clear path. Follow this path as it curves around the fell, passing the ruins of Kelswick Church and through Chapel Wood, offering different perspectives as you descend.

5. Return to the Start

The path will eventually lead you back down to the lower slopes of the fell. You'll rejoin the path you started on near the bench, from where it's a short walk back through the gate to your car.
