Gear tier
Switching tier resets prices and weights to that tier's defaults — any of your edits will be lost.
Prices and weights are typical UK retail values for new gear — a planning guide, not a quote. Real prices vary by brand, sale and size. Every value is editable. Full disclaimer
Disclaimer
This estimator and all of the values it shows — prices, weights and totals — are provided free of charge for general guidance only, on an "as is" basis, and are approximate.
Default prices are typical UK retail values for new gear at the time of writing and will not reflect every brand, size, sale or second-hand option. Default weights are typical for each tier but vary considerably between products. The "essential" and "worn" markers are general indicators, not safety advice. What you actually need on any given walk depends on the route, the weather, your experience and the people you are with — factors this tool cannot know.
Carrying an item does not make an activity safe, and this tool is not a substitute for proper planning or appropriate training and experience. Always check a mountain-specific weather forecast (such as MWIS) and carry the kit and skills the conditions require. Use of this tool is entirely at your own risk.

Safety on the Fells
The mountains can be dangerous. Weather changes quickly. Be prepared before you set out.
- Plan Your Route: Choose a walk that matches your fitness and experience. Check the weather forecast specifically for the mountains (e.g., MWIS).
- Tell Someone: Let someone know your route and what time you expect to be back.
- Wear the Right Gear: Wear sturdy walking boots with good grip. Pack waterproof layers, a hat, and gloves, even on a sunny day.
- Navigate Properly: Carry a map and compass and know how to use them. A fully charged phone with a GPS app is a good backup, but don't rely on it.
- Pack Essentials: Take plenty of food and water, a torch (headtorch is best), a first-aid kit, and an emergency whistle and survival bag.
- In an Emergency: If you are lost or injured, dial 999 or 112 and ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue.
Essential OS Maps
A physical map and compass are essential for safety and navigation in the fells. These are the four Ordnance Survey Explorer maps that cover the entire Lake District National Park.
How It Works
Where do the prices and weights come from?
They're typical UK retail values for new gear at each tier — budget (entry-level), standard (solid mid-range) and premium (high-end / lightweight). Every figure is editable, so when you've got real prices from your shortlist you can paste them in and the totals update instantly.
What's the difference between total cost and pack weight?
Total cost is everything you've ticked. Pack weight only counts what's actually in your rucksack — by default it excludes items you'd typically be wearing or carrying on your body (boots, base layer, walking trousers, sunglasses). Each item has a blue "worn" tag if it's excluded; you can flip the toggle on the totals card to count everything instead.
Does it save my choices?
Yes — your tier, ticks and any custom prices or weights are saved in your browser on your own device. Nothing reaches our servers. Use "Start over" to wipe everything, or "Reset to tier defaults" to keep your ticks but restore the prices and weights.
How heavy is too heavy?
A typical Lake District day pack is 5–8 kg, winter days 7–10 kg, and multi-day wild-camping 10–15 kg depending on kit. Many walkers aim to keep pack weight below roughly 20% of their body weight. The colour pill next to the weight gives a quick light / standard / heavy visual.
