Step-by-Step Guide
1. Start at Armboth Car Park
Park at the Armboth public car park on the western side of Thirlmere (CA12 4TW). This is a quieter road than the main A591 on the opposite shore. The views across the water to Helvellyn are superb right from the start.
2. Follow the Shoreline Path
From the car park, take the footpath heading south, with the reservoir on your left. This is a lovely, undulating path through the trees along the water's edge.
3. The Climb to Fisherplace Gill
After a short distance, you will see a signposted path on your right heading uphill. This is the path to Fisherplace Gill. It climbs steadily through beautiful larch and pine woodland.
4. Enjoy the Waterfalls
As you get higher, you'll hear the sound of the cascading water. The path brings you right alongside the gill, with several lovely waterfalls tumbling down the rocks. It's a magical spot, especially after rainfall. Take care on the slippery rocks if you explore closer.
5. The Return Journey
This is an 'out and back' walk. Once you've had your fill of the waterfalls, simply retrace your steps back down the woodland path and along the shoreline to the Armboth car park.
