Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start in Grasmere Village

Start from the centre of Grasmere. Walk up the lane called Easedale Road, which leads away from the main village green. Follow this road for about half a mile, passing houses and guesthouses.

2. The Path to Silver How

Look for a signposted footpath on the left that leads up a steep, walled lane. This path, known as Wray Gill, zig-zags uphill, gaining height quickly. As you climb, the views over Grasmere begin to open up behind you.

3. The Summit Plateau

The path eventually levels out as you reach the intriguing, undulating summit plateau of Silver How. There are many paths criss-crossing this area. Keep heading generally west, and you will soon reach the large summit cairn (395m).

4. Enjoy the Views

The summit offers a spectacular panorama. To the east is Grasmere, to the south is Elterwater and Windermere, and to the west are the iconic shapes of the Langdale Pikes. It's a fantastic place for a well-earned rest.

5. The Descent to Chapel Stile

From the summit, take one of the clear paths that descend south-west towards the Langdale valley. These paths can be steep and rocky in places. Your destination is the village of Chapel Stile, which you can see below you.
