Step-by-Step Guide

1. The Starting Point

Begin the walk on the A591 in Windermere town, directly opposite the main entrance to Windermere railway station. A large sign for 'Orrest Head' clearly marks the start of the paved lane.

2. The Woodland Ascent

Follow the lane as it climbs steadily uphill, passing through beautiful woodland. The path is well-maintained. Part of the route is an accessible "Miles without Stiles" path suitable for rugged pushchairs and mobility scooters.

3. The Summit Viewpoint

After about 20-30 minutes, you will emerge from the trees onto the rocky summit of Orrest Head. You are immediately greeted by one of the finest panoramas in the Lake District.

4. Wainwright's Inspiration

Take time to explore the summit. A plaque helps you identify the surrounding fells, from the Old Man of Coniston to the Langdale Pikes and Scafell Pike. This is the very view that inspired Alfred Wainwright to dedicate his life to walking and mapping the fells.

5. The Return Journey

Once you have soaked in the magnificent views, simply retrace your steps back down the same path to return to Windermere town centre.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Parking: There is no dedicated car park for the walk. It is best to park in Windermere's main pay-and-display car parks (e.g., near the station) and walk to the start.
  • Wainwright's First Fell: Famously, this was the very first Lakeland summit Alfred Wainwright climbed in 1930. He later wrote, "those fells were asleep,....and I had gone and woken them up."
  • Facilities: All facilities, including cafes, pubs, shops, and public toilets, are available in Windermere town.
  • Footwear: While the path is good, the summit is rocky, so sensible shoes are advised.
