Binsey

Climb this gentle 'outlying fell' for some of the best panoramic views in the northern lakes.

Binsey is a small, isolated fell that punches well above its weight. As one of Alfred Wainwright's "outlying fells", it offers a straightforward and quick ascent to a summit with truly magnificent, far-reaching views. On a clear day, you can see the Skiddaw range, Bassenthwaite Lake, and across the Solway Firth to the hills of Scotland.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. The Starting Point

The walk begins from a small, rough lay-by at a place called Binsey Lodge. From here, a gate gives access to the open fellside and the clear path ahead.

2. The Grassy Track

A wide, obvious grassy track leads directly from the gate all the way to the summit. The climb is short and never too steep, making it very manageable for all ages.

3. The Summit

You'll reach the broad, safe summit in no time at all. It is marked by a trig point and an ancient tumulus (burial mound). The real reward is the incredible panoramic view.

4. The Return

After enjoying the view and perhaps flying a kite, simply retrace your steps down the same grassy path to the gate where you began.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Parking: There is a small, rough lay-by at Binsey Lodge (nearest postcode CA7 1HH). Please park considerately as space is very limited.
  • A Wainwright Outlier: Binsey features in Alfred Wainwright's "The Outlying Fells of Lakeland", a book dedicated to the smaller, more remote hills outside the main ranges.
  • Huge Views: For such little effort, the view is one of the best. You can see the main northern fells, the sea, and the hills of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland on a clear day.
  • No Facilities: There are no facilities at Binsey. The nearest pubs and cafes can be found in nearby villages like Uldale or Ireby.
