Step-by-Step Guide
1. Grasmere Village to Dove Cottage
Begin in the centre of Grasmere village. Head out on the main road towards Ambleside, soon passing Dove Cottage on your left, the famous first family home of William Wordsworth.
2. The 'Coffin Route' to Rydal
Just past Dove Cottage, take the lane that climbs to the left. This is the start of the 'Coffin Route', a historic track that offers wonderful views as it contours above Rydal Water towards Rydal village.
3. Rydal Hall and Rydal Cave
Descend into Rydal. You can explore Rydal Mount, Wordsworth's later home. From here, follow the signs and path up towards Rydal Cave, a huge man-made cavern that was once a slate quarry. It is a fantastic place to explore.
4. Southern Shore of Rydal Water
From the cave, drop back down to the road and cross it to follow the path along the southern shore of Rydal Water. This offers beautiful reflections of Nab Scar.
5. Return to Grasmere
The path continues past Rydal Water and along the southern edge of Grasmere lake, leading you through pleasant woodland. You will eventually emerge onto the Red Bank road, which you can follow back down into Grasmere village to complete the circuit.
