Explore Eskdale

Discover one of the Lake District's most stunning and peaceful valleys.

Eskdale is a truly special place. Tucked away in the western Lake District, it offers breathtaking scenery, fantastic walks, fascinating history, and a pace of life that feels a world away from the busier tourist hubs. From England's highest mountain to its most famous miniature railway, Eskdale is packed with incredible things to see and do.

Ride the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway

Known affectionately as 'La'al Ratty', this narrow-gauge steam railway travels seven miles from the coast at Ravenglass into the heart of the valley. A must-do!

Walk up Scafell Pike

For the adventurous, the classic route up England's highest peak starts from the head of Eskdale. It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding full day's hike.

Visit Muncaster Castle

Standing guard at the entrance to the valley, this historic (and reputedly haunted) castle offers tours, beautiful gardens, and a hawk and owl centre.

Discover Hardknott Roman Fort

Perched dramatically on the Hardknott Pass, the ruins of this Roman fort offer a fascinating glimpse into the past and stunning panoramic views.

Walk Along the River Esk

Enjoy one of the many gentle riverside walks. Look out for the ancient packhorse bridges and beautiful waterfalls that dot the river's course.

Find Stanley Ghyll Force

Take the beautiful walk through a narrow gorge to discover this spectacular 60-foot waterfall. It feels like a hidden, prehistoric world.

Visit Eskdale Mill

Explore this beautifully restored 18th-century watermill. It's the last working water-powered corn mill in the Lake District National Park.

Relax in a Traditional Pub

Eskdale is blessed with several excellent, walker-friendly pubs. Enjoy a well-earned pint and a hearty meal at the Boot Inn or the Brook House Inn.

Tips for Visiting Eskdale

  • Drive Carefully: The roads into Eskdale, especially Hardknott and Wrynose passes, are very steep, narrow, and winding. They are not suitable for all vehicles or drivers. The route from Ravenglass is much gentler.
  • Check Train Times: If you're planning to use the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, check the timetable in advance, especially outside of the main season.
  • No Mobile Signal: Be prepared for very limited or no mobile phone signal in large parts of the valley. Plan ahead and download maps for offline use.
  • Respect the Environment: Eskdale is a haven for wildlife. Please take all your litter home and keep dogs under control, especially around livestock.
