Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start at Brockhole

Park at the large pay-and-display car park at Brockhole on Windermere (LA23 1LJ). Before starting, enjoy the grounds, adventure playground, and lakeshore access that the centre offers.

2. Heading Inland

From the main entrance, walk back up the drive to the main A591 road. Carefully cross the road and take the public footpath almost directly opposite, heading up a track called Holbeck Lane.

3. Through Fields to Townend

The lane leads you past some houses and turns into a pleasant footpath through fields. Follow the waymarkers for the short distance to the hamlet of Troutbeck. As you reach the road, Townend will be on your right.

4. Explore Townend

Take time to visit this fascinating National Trust property. It provides a unique glimpse into the life of a wealthy Cumbrian farming family over the centuries. The quirky furniture and wood carvings are particularly special.

5. The Return Journey

After your visit, simply retrace your steps along the same pleasant footpaths and lanes, crossing the A591 again to return to the Brockhole visitor centre for a well-deserved ice cream or coffee.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Two Attractions in One: Check the opening times for both Brockhole and Townend before you travel, as Townend has more limited hours, especially outside of peak season.
  • Refreshments: Brockhole has multiple cafes and food outlets. The village of Troutbeck, near Townend, also has a great pub, The Mortal Man, with a fantastic beer garden.
  • Getting There: Brockhole is easily accessible by car, by the 555 bus which runs between Kendal and Keswick, or even by boat using the Windermere Lake Cruises service.
  • Footwear: Trainers or comfortable walking shoes are fine for this walk, as the paths are generally good.
