Blencathra, with its distinctive saddle-shaped summit, is one of the most beloved fells in the Northern Lakes. While the infamous Sharp Edge attracts thrill-seekers, Hall's Fell Ridge provides an equally exhilarating, if slightly less severe, scramble directly to the summit. Wainwright himself described it as 'the finest way of all to the top'. This route offers sustained interest, fantastic exposure, and magnificent views over Keswick and Derwentwater.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Start in Threlkeld
Begin in the village of Threlkeld, located at the foot of Blencathra. Parking is available at the Blencathra Centre or in lay-bys near the village (CA12 4SG). From the village, follow the lane signposted towards the Blencathra Centre.
2. Approach Hall's Fell
Just before Gategill Farm, take a path on the right that crosses a small beck and begins the steep grassy ascent up the lower slopes of Hall's Fell. The path is clear and aims directly for the crest of the ridge ahead.
3. The Hall's Fell Ridge Scramble
As you gain height, the path becomes rockier and the scrambling begins. The ridge is narrow with significant exposure, particularly on the left-hand side. The route involves using hands and feet to navigate the rocky steps. The rock is generally sound and offers good holds. The ridge leads directly to the summit trig point.
4. Blencathra Summit
Upon reaching the top of the ridge, you arrive at Blencathra's summit (868m). The true summit is marked by a trig pillar. The views north towards the Solway Firth and south across the main Lakeland fells are exceptional.
5. Descent via Blease Fell
For a straightforward descent, walk west from the summit along the gentle grassy ridge towards Blease Fell. A well-trodden path zig-zags down the western flank of the mountain, offering fantastic views of Keswick and Derwentwater, before returning you to the lanes that lead back to Threlkeld.
Visitor Information & Tips
- Scrambling Experience: Hall's Fell Ridge is a Grade 1 scramble. You should be confident on steep, exposed, rocky ground. Avoid this route in high winds, rain, or icy conditions.
- Route Finding: The route up the ridge is obvious, but it's important to have a map and compass for the descent, especially if visibility is poor.
- Alternative Routes: If you're not comfortable with scrambling, Blencathra can be ascended via the much easier paths from Blease Fell or Scales Fell.
- Local Pubs: Threlkeld has two excellent pubs, The Horse and Farrier and The Salutation Inn, perfect for post-walk refreshment.
