Whinlatter Forest is a vast outdoor playground perfect for walking, cycling, and climbing enthusiasts.

It is considered one of the jewels of the Lake District for its abundance of recreational opportunities.


This trail takes you through the forest and up to the open summit of Whinlatter Top, where you can soak in the panoramic views.


After the hike, reward yourself with a treat from the café located within the visitor centre.


The hike begins at the visitor centre, where you should follow the green path at the back of the centre.


You will reach a crossroads known as the Horsebox Crossroads (Junction Marker 2) at Grid Ref NY 207 248.


Turn left and continue along the track until you reach its end at Grid Ref NY 203 247 (Junction Marker 55), where a stile opens up to a grassy path.


This path follows along the forest boundary for a while before heading towards the summit at Grid Ref NY 197 249.


Estimated Total Time: 2 hours (for ascent and descent)


Ideal for: This trail is suitable for adults with moderate fitness levels and older children. However, younger children and all-terrain pushchairs may have difficulty navigating through boggy areas.
