Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start at Nether Wasdale

Park at the small car park at Cinderdale Bridge, just as you approach Wastwater from Nether Wasdale village (CA20 1ET). There is a handy walkers' shelter here. The walk begins along the quiet, narrow lane that runs along the lake's western shore.

2. Enter Low Wood

After a short walk along the road, take a signposted footpath on the left that leads through a gate. A few stone steps take you down into the ancient woodland of Low Wood. Dogs can usually be let off the lead here.

3. The Lakeshore Path

The path meanders through the beautiful woods, passing the historic Wasdale Hall (now a youth hostel). It soon reaches the famous shoreline of Wastwater. The views from here are truly epic, looking up the lake towards Yewbarrow, Great Gable, and Scafell Pike.

4. To the River Irt

Continue along the shore, a perfect spot for a picnic or a paddle. The path eventually reaches the southern end of the lake, where the River Irt flows out. This is a good turning-around point.

5. The Return Loop

From the River Irt, take a path that leads slightly away from the lake up through the woodland. This path runs parallel to the one you came on, eventually leading you through a field and back to the quiet lane for the short walk back to the car park.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • The Drive In: Wasdale is accessed by narrow, winding roads. Take your time, use passing places, and be prepared for stunning views around every corner.
  • Refreshments: The nearest pubs are in Nether Wasdale village, a short drive from the start of the walk. The Sawmill Cafe and the Strands Inn are both excellent choices.
  • Paddling Warning: Wastwater is a beautiful spot for paddling, but be aware that the shore drops away very steeply into deep, cold water. Supervise children and dogs closely.
  • Bluebells: In late spring (usually May), Low Wood is carpeted with a spectacular display of bluebells, making this walk even more magical.
