Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start at Waterhead

Park at the large pay-and-display car park at Waterhead, Ambleside (LA22 0ES), next to the Windermere Lake Cruises pier. From the car park, walk a short distance north along the A591 towards Ambleside.

2. Find the Footpath

Carefully cross the main road. Look for a public footpath sign for Jenkin Crag pointing up a narrow, stepped path next to a slate wall. This path climbs steeply behind some houses.

3. Into Skelghyll Woods

The path leads you over a stile and into the beautiful ancient woodland of Skelghyll. Follow the main track as it zig-zags steeply uphill. The woods are particularly beautiful in spring with bluebells and in autumn for the colours.

4. Jenkin Crag Viewpoint

Near the top of the climb, you'll see a National Trust sign for Jenkin Crag. Go through a gap in the wall and walk the few metres to the rocky outcrop. Take a seat on the bench and enjoy the spectacular panoramic view over Windermere.

5. The Return Loop

From the viewpoint, follow the path as it contours around the crag. This leads to a junction of several paths. Take the main path heading right, which will begin to descend gently through the woods, eventually bringing you back to the track you ascended on for the return to Waterhead.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Footwear: The path is stony, steep, and can be very slippery with wet leaves. Good walking boots with grip are essential.
  • Refreshments: Waterhead has a number of cafes and pubs with outdoor seating, perfect for a post-walk drink by the lake. Ambleside town centre is also a short walk away.
  • Champion Trees: Skelghyll Woods is home to the 'Ambleside Champion Tree Trail', which includes England's tallest Grand Fir tree. See if you can spot it!
  • Stagshaw Garden: The route passes the entrance to this informal National Trust woodland garden, which is a lovely place to explore, especially in spring when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in bloom.
