While walking is the best way to see the Lake District up close, a scenic drive through the mountain passes is an exhilarating experience and an easy way to see some of the most dramatic landscapes. From sweeping valley roads to steep, winding passes, the region offers some of the best driving routes in the UK.

Honister Pass

This dramatic mountain road links Borrowdale (Keswick) with Buttermere. Expect sweeping views over Fleetwith Pike, tight bends, and classic Lake District scenery.

Route: Keswick → Seatoller → Honister → Buttermere
Time/Distance: 18–22 miles, 1.5–2.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Honister Slate Mine, Fleetwith Pike, Buttermere
Stops: Honister Slate Mine, Gatesgarth, Buttermere village
Parking: Keswick, Seatoller, Buttermere

Tip: Driving clockwise via Seatoller and up Honister is often easier on the steep sections.

Kirkstone Pass

This is the highest pass open to traffic in the Lake District, connecting Ambleside to Ullswater. It’s a stunning route with big views and an inn at the summit.

Route: Ambleside → Kirkstone → Patterdale → Glenridding

Best light is usually in the late afternoon, especially when descending towards Windermere.

Hardknott & Wrynose Passes

For confident drivers only. This is one of the steepest routes in England. Not recommended in bad weather, winter, or for large vehicles.

This route has gradients up to 30%, tight hairpins and single-track sections. A true test of driving skill with wild, rewarding views.

Route: Little Langdale to Eskdale or Ravenglass
Time/Distance: 25–35 miles, 2.5–4 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Highlights: Hardknott Roman Fort, Eskdale valley
Stops: Roman Fort, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
Parking: Limited lay-bys, village car parks

Tip: Use low gears on descents and be prepared to reverse to a passing place.

Half-Day: Ambleside & Ullswater Loop

Ideal for first-time visitors who want big views without a difficult drive. About 30 miles, 2–3 hours with a café stop.

Ambleside → Kirkstone Pass → Patterdale → Glenridding → return via A592

Full-Day: Passes & Lakes Grand Tour

Best for confident drivers looking for the most dramatic scenery. Around 70–90 miles, 6–8 hours with photo stops and a short walk.

Keswick → Honister → Buttermere → Langdale → Hardknott & Wrynose → Ambleside
