The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway — affectionately known as “La’al Ratty” — is one of England’s most scenic narrow-gauge steam railways. The seven-mile line runs from coastal Ravenglass to Dalegarth in the beautiful Eskdale Valley, offering stunning views and a unique way to explore the western Lake District.
The Journey & Destination
The Adventure Begins
The journey starts in Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park. From there, the steam train winds its way through woodlands and across open fellside, with views of Scafell Pike on clear days. Open-sided carriages are perfect for soaking in the scenery.
At Dalegarth Station
The line ends at Dalegarth for Boot, where you’ll find a welcoming café and gift shop. This is the starting point for beautiful walks, including the gentle riverside trail to the spectacular Stanley Ghyll Force waterfall. Spend a few hours exploring before catching a return train.
Stations on the line: Ravenglass → Miteside Halt → Murthwaite Halt → Irton Road → The Green → Beckfoot → Dalegarth for Boot
