Rannerdale Knotts

A small fell with mighty views and a secret valley of bluebells.

Rannerdale Knotts is a fantastic little fell that punches well above its weight. A short, steep climb from the roadside rewards you with one of the finest views in the Lake District, looking out over the twin lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water, framed by the mighty Grasmoor and High Stile ranges. In late spring, the walk is made even more special by the "secret valley" on its slopes, which becomes a spectacular sea of bluebells.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start at Cinderdale Common

Park at the National Trust car park at Cinderdale Common, located on the B5289 between Buttermere village and Lanthwaite Wood (CA13 9UZ). From the car park, carefully cross the road to a stile.

2. The Steep Ascent

Cross the stile and follow the narrow grassy track as it begins to climb very steeply. This is the main effort of the walk. Pause to catch your breath and enjoy the incredible views of Buttermere lake opening up behind you.

3. Along the Ridge to the Summit

As the path levels out, you will reach the ridge of Rannerdale Knotts. Follow the path along this knobbly, exciting ridge. The summit is the highest point along the ridge, offering a superb panorama over Crummock Water and the surrounding high fells.

4. Descend into Rannerdale Valley

From the summit, continue along the path as it begins its steep, stone-pitched descent towards the valley of Rannerdale Beck. Take care on this section as the stones can be slippery.

5. The Valley Path and Bluebells

At the bottom of the descent, turn right and follow the lovely valley path back towards the road. In late April and May, this valley is filled with a spectacular carpet of bluebells. Please stick to the path to protect these delicate flowers. The path leads you directly back to the car park.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Parking: Use the National Trust pay-and-display car park (free for members). This is a popular spot and can fill up very quickly, especially during bluebell season.
  • Bluebell Season: The Rannerdale bluebells are a famous natural spectacle, usually at their best in late April and early May. The area gets extremely busy, so an early start is essential. Please do not walk amongst the flowers.
  • Footwear: This is a proper fell walk with steep, rocky sections. Good hiking boots are essential.
  • Refreshments: The nearest facilities are in Buttermere village, which has two excellent pubs and a couple of cafes.
