Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start in Patterdale

Start from the village of Patterdale. Parking is available at the Patterdale Hotel or in a main pay-and-display car park (CA11 0NN). From the post office, head south along the road and take the minor road on the left that crosses Goldrill Beck to the hamlet of Rooking.

2. The Climb to Boredale Hause

At Rooking, follow the lane left and then take the signposted path to the right for Boredale Hause. This good track climbs steadily, with excellent views opening up behind you towards Brothers Water and the Kirkstone Pass.

3. To the Summit of Place Fell

Before you reach the very top of the Boredale Hause pass, several paths branch off to the left. Take one of these paths, which climb steeply northwards, first to the cairn at Round Howe and then more gently across the summit plateau to the main summit of Place Fell (657m), marked by a trig pillar.

4. Descend to Sandwick

The views from the summit over Ullswater are simply spectacular. From the top, take a path heading north, passing the rocky outcrop known as The Knight. The path descends, curving east over the shoulder of Sleet Fell and down into the peaceful hamlet of Sandwick.

5. The Ullswater Shore Path

At Sandwick, turn left to pick up the famous Ullswater shore path. This is no simple stroll; it's a wonderfully rugged and undulating path that hugs the side of the fell high above the lake. It offers constantly changing, beautiful views for the 3.5-mile journey back to Rooking and Patterdale.

Visitor Information & Tips

  • Navigation: The summit plateau of Place Fell can be confusing in poor visibility. Good map and compass skills are essential for this walk.
  • Lakeside Path: Don't underestimate the return leg along the lake. While beautiful, it is rough and undulating, and can feel long at the end of the day.
