This walk is a Lake District classic for a reason. It packs in so much variety, starting in the tranquil Great Wood, continuing with an exhilarating (but short) scramble up Cat Gill, and rewarding your efforts with one of the finest viewpoints in the National Park from the summit of Walla Crag, looking out over Derwentwater and Keswick.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Start at Great Wood Car Park
Begin at the National Trust car park at Great Wood (Postcode: CA12 5UP). From the car park, cross the road and take the path signposted for Walla Crag. You'll enter the woods and soon reach a footbridge over Cat Gill.
2. The Cat Gill Scramble
This is the most exciting part! The path heads steeply uphill directly alongside the gill. It's a rocky scramble, meaning you'll need to use your hands to help you climb. It's short but strenuous. Take your time and enjoy the waterfalls as you ascend.
3. To Walla Crag Summit
As you emerge from the top of the gill, the path becomes much gentler. Follow it up to the summit of Walla Crag. The breathtaking panoramic view of Derwentwater, Keswick, Skiddaw, and the surrounding fells will open up before you. It's the perfect spot for a break.
4. Descending via Falcon Crag
From the summit, take the clear path heading south along the top of the crags. You'll pass over Falcon Crag, enjoying more spectacular views. The path eventually begins its descent, leading you back towards the road.
5. Return to Great Wood
The path will lead you down to the roadside at Ashness Bridge. Carefully cross the road and take the permissive path that runs through the woods parallel to the road, leading you back north to the Great Wood car park where you started.
Visitor Information & Tips
- Parking: Use the Great Wood National Trust car park (pay and display, free for members). Parking at Ashness Bridge is very limited.
- The Scramble: The Cat Gill section is steep and requires a head for heights. It can be very slippery when wet. An alternative, gentler path is available if you prefer to avoid the scramble.
- Footwear: Good walking boots with grip are essential for the rocky and often muddy terrain.
- Refreshments: There are no facilities on the route. The nearest pubs, cafes, and shops are in Keswick, just a 5-minute drive away.
