1. Starting Point & Parking
The walk begins from a small parking area near the village of Fell Side in the Caldbeck Fells. Due to limited space, it's a good idea to arrive early. From here, you will join the well-marked Cumbria Way footpath.
2. The Path to the Mine
Follow the Cumbria Way as it gently ascends. The path leads you through beautiful, rolling countryside, past traditional stone walls and through patches of woodland. The views of the surrounding fells open up as you climb.
3. Reaching Fell Side Mine
After about 45 minutes to an hour of steady walking, you'll arrive at the remains of Fell Side Mine. This historic site features the ruins of old mine buildings, cottages, and spoil heaps that hint at its industrial past.
4. Exploring the Site
Take your time exploring the fascinating ruins. Interpretation boards on site provide interesting details about the history of the mine and the lives of the miners who worked here. It’s a great spot for a picnic and to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
5. The Return Journey
When you are ready, simply retrace your steps back along the Cumbria Way to the starting point, enjoying the wonderful views from a different perspective on your way down.
