Animals, Birds & Wildlife

A guide to the incredible wildlife of the Lake District and where to find it.

Beyond the breathtaking scenery, the Lake District is a haven for wildlife. Its diverse habitats of mountains, woodlands, lakes, and rivers support a fantastic range of animals and birds. For the patient observer, there are some truly magical wildlife encounters to be had. Here are some of the iconic species to look out for.

Iconic Mammals

Red Squirrels

The Lake District is one of the last strongholds for the native red squirrel in England. Their playful antics are a joy to watch.
Where to look: Whinlatter Forest, Aira Force, and Smardale Gill Nature Reserve are excellent spots. They are often seen in the woods around the northern lakes like Derwentwater and Ullswater.

Red Deer

The majestic red deer, Britain's largest native land mammal, can be found in the more remote valleys. The autumn rut, when stags roar and clash antlers, is a spectacular sight.
Where to look: The Ennerdale and Haweswater valleys are classic locations. You may also see them on the fells around Martindale.

Otters

These shy and elusive creatures are making a welcome return to the lakes and rivers. An encounter with an otter is a truly special moment, often requiring patience and an early start.
Where to look: The River Eden, Derwentwater, and Ullswater are known otter hotspots. Look for their distinctive V-shaped wake in the water at dawn or dusk.

Birds of Prey & More

Ospreys

These magnificent fish-eating birds of prey returned to the Lake District in 2001 after a long absence. Watching them dive for fish is a breathtaking experience.
Where to look: The primary viewing point is at Dodd Wood, overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake, where a breeding pair nests each summer (April-August). You can also see them fishing over Esthwaite Water.

Peregrine Falcons

The fastest animal on the planet, peregrines can be seen hunting over the fells and crags. Their speed and agility are incredible to witness.
Where to look: They nest on high crags throughout the park. Keep an eye out in places like Borrowdale and the Langdale Pikes.

Upland Birds

The fells are home to specialist birds like the Ring Ouzel (a mountain blackbird), the Wheatear (a summer visitor), and the Meadow Pipit. Their calls are often the soundtrack to a day's walking.

Respecting Our Wildlife

To protect the wonderful nature of the Lake District, it's vital to observe wildlife responsibly.

  • Keep your distance: Use binoculars or a zoom lens to get a closer look without disturbing the animals. This is especially important during breeding seasons.
  • Leave no trace: Take all your litter home with you and stick to the paths to avoid damaging fragile habitats.
  • Keep dogs under control: When walking with a dog, keep it on a lead, especially around livestock and during the bird nesting season (March-July).
